기후위기에서 벗어날 방법을 생각해 봤습니다.

몇 년 전, 저는 퓰리처상 수상 사진집을 보면서 제가 겪어 보지 못했던 전쟁의 참상을 간접적으로 접하며, 제가 살아가는 이 시대에는 전쟁이 없다는 것에 안도감을 느꼈었습니다. 그러나, 그 안도감은 길게 이어지지않았습니다. 약 2년 전 우크라이나와 러시아의 전쟁이 발발했다는 뉴스 속보를 새벽에 접했을때의 그 두려움은 이루 말할수 없었습니다. 두려움에 심장이 두근거리고 손발이 후들거리며 눈물이 연실 흘러내렸었습니다. 그리고 연이어 팔레스타인과 이스라엘의 전쟁이 시작되었습니다. 현재까지도 남북한이 분단되어 있는 우리 대한민국에서도 저렇게 전쟁이 일어날 수 있겠다는 생각이 점점 고조되면서, 제 마음 한 켠에는 상당히 불안한 마음이 큽니다. 최근에는 전쟁에 대비하여 뭐라도 해야겠다는 생각에 태어나 처음으로 사격훈련장을 찾아 실탄 사격을 체험하고 돌아오기도 했습니다. 처음 도전해보는 사격이라는 것에 앞서 설렘과 즐거움이 동반되어 잠시 흥분하기도 했었지만, 그날 밤 그 총으로 사람을 죽일 수도 있다는 생각에 제가 느낀 흥분감은 그 잠재적인 잔임함과 폭력성에 사그라들었습니다. 전쟁이 발발하면 어떻게 대처해야 할지, 나의 아이들은 안전할지, 간호조무사로써 부상병들을 케어해줘야할지 아니면 저격수로 전선에 나가야 할지 등등 다양한 상황을 머릿속으로 그려보기도 했습니다. 그러한 생각을 하는 중간 중간에 저는 한번씩 세계 뉴스도 찾아보곤 했습니다. 전쟁만으로도 삶이 흔들리는 느낌이 드는 데, 그보다도 더욱 강렬한 고통을 안겨주는 것은 기후위기였습니다.
A few years ago, while I was looking at a Pulitzer Prize-winning photo book, I indirectly encountered the horrors of war that I had never experienced before, and I felt relieved that there was no war in the era where I lived. However, it did not last long. The fear that suffocated me when I heard the breaking news early in the morning that a war broke out between Ukraine and Russia about 2 years ago was indescribable. My heart was pounding with fear, my hands and feet were shaking, and tears were flowing. Not long after that, the war between Palestine and Israel began. As the idea that a war like that could break out even in Korea, where North and South Korea are still divided, is becoming more and more intense, anxiousness in my mind grows more and more. Recently, I even went to a firing range for the first time and experienced live shooting, under the thought that I should do something to prepare for the war. The excitement and joy of the first experience seized me for a moment, but that night, they faded away by the thought that that gun might kill someone, the potential cruelty and violence. I sometimes drew various situations in my head, such as how I would respond if war broke out, whether my children would be safe, whether I should take care of wounded soldiers as a practical nurse or go to the front as a sniper, and so on. While imagining, I occasionally looked up world news. It felt like war alone shook my life, but what caused even more intense pain was the climate crisis.
여러분, 전 세계의 지구촌에서 저와 동시대에 살아가고 계신 모든 여러분. 우리는 절벽 끝에 내몰려 있습니다. 자연이라는 거대하고 숭고한 위력 앞에 우리는 허둥지둥 방황하며, 합심해서 위기를 헤쳐나갈 생각보다는 당황한 나머지 인류에게는 전혀 도움이 되지 않는 폭력적이고 야만적인 방향으로의 탈출구를 찾고 있는 듯합니다. 새로운 신형 스마트 폰이나, 새로운 아파트, 드넓은 골프장, 부자들이나 갈 수 있는 인공 도시 등등은 현 시대를 살아가는, 기후위기 앞에 직면한 우리 모두에게는 쓸모없는 것들입니다. 각국에서 우리의 다음 세대인 어린이와 청소년들은 미래의 기본권을 보장하라며 헌법 재판소에 호소하는 방법을 취하고 있습니다. 저를 비롯한 우리 어른들은 이 아이들 앞에서 부끄러워해야 합니다. 열심히 탄소 중립을 향해 노력하고 있다고 최선을 다하고 있다고 거짓말하지 말아야 합니다. 그 아이들에게 그런식으로 답변하지 않았으면 합니다. 변명하지 않았으면 합니다.
Best attendees, everyone around the world living at the same time as me; we are driven over the cliff and now standing at the edge. In the face of nature's enormous and supreme power, we are perturbed and wandering around, looking for a way out that is directed toward savagery and violence that is completely unhelpful to humanity rather than working together to overcome the crisis. New smartphones, new apartments, spacious golf courses, artificial cities only for the rich, and so on are of no use to us living in the present time, facing the climate crisis. In each country, our next generation, children and youth, are appealing to the Constitutional Court to guarantee their basic rights for the future. We adults, including me, should be ashamed in front of these children. We must never lie that we are doing our best to achieve carbon neutrality. I hope we don't tell those lies to our children. We should not make excuses.
지금 당장, 우리는 필수 식량 생산을 제외한 모든 생산 활동을 중단해야 합니다. 전쟁을 지속하고 있는 푸틴 대통령께서도 전쟁을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 같이 반격하고 있는 우크라이나의 젤렌스키 대통령도 전쟁을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 사상의 대립으로 치닫는 모든 직간접적인 전쟁 지원을 서방국들은 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 팔레스타인 마흐무드 압바스 대통령께서도 전쟁을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 이스라엘의 베냐민 네타냐후 총리께서도 전쟁을 멈추어주시기 바랍니다. 이란의 에브라임 라이시 대통령께서도 전쟁을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 그 전쟁들과 관련한 모든 무장 세력들도 전쟁을 멈추고 공격을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 우리가 살아가는 지구가 버틸 수 있는 한계는 끝에 다다르고 있습니다. 안그래도 가파른 속도로 지구가 병들어 가고 있는데, 서로를 죽이고 서로의 삶의 터전을 폭파시키는 어리석은 짓은 그 이유를 불문하고 제발 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 또한, 전세계 각국의 대기업들은 공장을 멈추어 주시기 바랍니다. 우리는 이미 물질 과잉시대를 살아가고 있습니다. 도대체 언제까지 상위 몇프로의 호주머니를 위해 가엾은 생명들이 기아로 허덕이고 죽음에 내몰려야하는 겁니까. 지구의 한 측에서는 인간이 기아로 죽어가는데, 한 쪽의 기름진 땅에서는 가축을 먹여 살찌울 옥수수 따위를 재배하는 것이.. 이런 현실이 온전한거라고, 그럴 수 있는 것이라고, 세상은 원래 그런것이라고 말하지 마십시오.
Right now, we must stop all production except essential food production. I ask the President of Russia, Vladimir Putin, who is continuing the war, to stop the war. I also ask for the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelenskyy, who is fighting back, to stop the war. I ask all Western countries to stop all direct and indirect support for wars that lead to ideological conflict. I ask the President of Palestine, Mahmoud Abbas, to stop the war. I also asked the Prime Minister of Israel, Benjamin Netanyahu, to stop the war. I ask the President of Iran, Ebrahim Raisi, to stop the war. I ask all armed forces involved in those wars to stop fighting and attacking. The Earth we live on is wearing out to the limit it can endure. Mother Earth is getting sick at a rapid pace, and there is no reason to continue the foolish acts of killing each other and destroying each other's homes. Also, I ask all large corporations around the world to stop their factories and plants. We are already living in an era of material excess. Until when are the poor forced to starve and die to enrich the pockets of the few rich? Never say that on the one side of the Earth, humans are dying of starvation while on the other side, fertile land is growing corn to feed even livestock is a true reality that can happen, and it is just the way world is.

Best attendees, we are all the same human beings, barely threading one breath to another at this moment. We must change this current system that operates for someone's food, for someone's convenience, and for someone's wealth. If you say that it is impossible to change all at once, then we should stop for at least a few years. We must all temporarily suspend all civilization, leaving only the bare minimum machines, and begin a great energy transition. We have no time for lengthy discussions. Right now, we must start.
모든 기업은 공장을 멈추고 모든 국가는 계획을 세워야합니다. 각 지역에 친환경 에너지 생산시설을 촘촘이 설립하고, 멈춘 산업에서 발생한 무수한 노동력을 친환경 에너지 생산 시설 건립과 가동 유지 보수 교육 등등의 분야에서 일할 수 있도록 교육해야 합니다. 각 국의 모든 골프장 및 잉여 토지를 밭과 논, 숲으로 용도를 변경하여 산림을 가꾸고, 자급자족에 가까워질 수 있도록 식량 문제를 해결해야 합니다. 국가 간의 불필요한 농수산물 수출입을 최소한으로 줄이고 최대한 내수 식량 경제로 가능하도록 방향을 돌려야 합니다. 과도한 가축 생산을 줄이고 과도한 육식의 섭취를 줄여야만 합니다. 곳곳에서 발생하는 잉여 노동력을 농부로, 교육자로, 수공업자로 전환시켜야합니다.
All companies must stop their factories, and all countries must make a plan. Eco-friendly energy production facilities must be established and tightly located in each region, and numerous labor forces generated from stalled industries must be trained to work in fields such as construction, operation, and maintenance of eco-friendly energy production facilities. All golf courses and surplus land in each country must be converted into fields, rice paddles, and forests to cultivate forests and solve the food problem by establishing self-sufficiency agriculture. All unnecessary imports and exports of agricultural and fishery products between countries must be reduced, and the focus must be shifted toward the domestic food economy as much as possible. Excessive livestock production and excessive meat consumption must be reduced. The surplus labor generated everywhere must be converted into farmers, educators, and craftspersons.
대다수의 지구촌분들께서는 이러한 제 생각에 반대하실 수도 있습니다. 맘에 들지 않을 수도 있습니다. 개인의 자유와 인권의 침해라고 여기실수도 있습니다. 네, 맞습니다. 지금 여기서 우리는 직업의 선택과 소비의 권한 등의 개인의 자유와 인권이라는 기본권을 보장받을 수 없습니다. 미안하지만 어쩔 수 없습니다. 우리는 선택해야 합니다. 다가오는 기후위기에 앞서 너도나도 전쟁으로 인구를 조절하려는 각 국의 수장들의 체스게임에 휘둘려 저마다 총을 메고 전쟁터로 나가 무고한 목숨을 희생당하거나, 아니면 에너지 대전환이라는 시대의 과제를 다함께 이룩하거나 둘 중 하나입니다. 여러분은 어느 쪽을 선택하시겠습니까. 어느 쪽도 완전한 방법은 없습니다. 그러나, 전쟁과 전염병을 통해 누군가를 죽이고 살아남으실겁니까? 아니면 개인의 자유와 기호를 잠시 내려놓고 인류의 상생을 도모해보실겁니까? 국가와 국가간에 종교와 종교간에 오랜세월 치유되지 않은 악감정이 분명히 존재하겠지만, 그래도 잠시 지구촌 모두를, 모든 인류를, 지구에서 살아가는 모든 생명체와 이 죄많은 우리를 그동안 포용해준 푸른 지구를 위해, 전세계가 동시에 에너지 대전환을 이뤄야만 합니다. 지금 우리는 우주로 여행을 갈 때가 아닙니다. 우주에서의 전쟁을 고민할 때가 아닙니다. 여기도 저기도 핵을 가졌으니 우리도 핵을 가져야 할 때가 아닙니다. 제발 가장 시급한 문제에 모두가 동참하여, 미래의 세대들에게 최소한 그들 세대의 기술 발전으로 그 다음 문제를 해결할 수 있을 때까지 아주 잠깐의 여유 시간일지라도 우리는 마련해주어야만 합니다. 우리는 그래야만 합니다. 우리 모두는 죽음을 피할 수 없는 필멸의 인간인 동시에, 이 모든 빛나는 문명을 이룩하고, 이 모든 문제를 발생시킨 인간이기 때문입니다.
Most people around the world may disagree with me. They might not like it at all. And may consider it a violation of personal freedom and human rights. Yes, it is. Now, here, we cannot be guaranteed the basic rights of individual freedom and human rights, such as the right to choose a job or consume. Sorry, but I can't help it. We must choose. While the climate crisis is just around the corner, there are only two options: to be sacrificed carrying a gun on a battlefield, swayed by the chess game of the leaders of each country who are trying to control the population through war or to work together to overcome the challenge of our time, a great energy transition. Which one would you choose? Neither way is perfect. But, will you want to survive by killing others through war and epidemics? Or will you put aside your personal freedom and preferences for a moment and seek the coexistence of humanity? There will certainly be animosity remaining like a wound between nations and religions that has not been healed for a long time, but for the sake of the entire world, all mankind, all life forms living on Earth, and the green Earth that has embraced us, sinful people, until now, the whole world must come together and achieve a great energy transition at the same time. Now is not the time for us to travel into space. It is not the time to worry about the space war. It is not a moment to make nuclear weapons just because they have one. We need everyone to join in on the most pressing problems and give future generations at least a little extra time until their own technological advancements can solve the next problem. We must. This is because we are all mortal humans who cannot avoid death, and at the same time, we are humans who have built this brilliant civilization and created all these problems.
전세계 모든 이들이 솔솔부는 바람을 느끼며 따사로운 햇살에 반짝이는 싱그러운 초록잎과 파아란 하늘을 보며.. 건강한 자연을 느끼며 행복할 권리가 있습니다. 전 인류의 행복권을 위해 우리 모두 잠시 멈추어, 친환경에너지로의 대전환을 이룩합시다. 우린 할 수 있습니다. 모두가 합심한다면 가능합니다. 대폭우, 태풍, 산불, 쓰나미 등등 우린 이 역경을 헤쳐나갈수 있습니다. 저는 무신론자입니다. 저에게는 신앙이 없습니다. 하지만, 이 대전환에 대한 믿음은 있습니다. 우린 할 수 있습니다. 함께하면 할 수 있습니다. 하면 됩니다. 지금 당장. 지금 당장 모든 부수적인 것들을 멈추고 시작해야만 합니다. 지금 당장.
Everyone around the world has a right to feel the sound nature and be happy, feeling the gentle breeze and seeing the fresh green leaves and blue sky sparkling in the warm sunlight. For the sake of the right to happiness for all humankind, let us all pause for a moment and achieve a great transition to eco-friendly energy. We can do it. If we all work together, we can. We can overcome all adversities, such as heavy rain, typhoons, forest fires, and tsunamis. I am an atheist. I have no faith. But I have faith in this great transformation. We can do it. Together, we can do it if we start right now. We must stop every collateral thing and get started. Right now.
